Infographic - 2025 Men’s NCAA Champs participation by class year.

Want to compete for your school in the finals of men’s NCAA Gymnastics Championships? It helps to be an upperclassman.

Analysis treats 5th and Gr. as the same. Data used was from day 2 only. This will be the last year that athletes granted a COVID year will compete.

  • Penn State competed no freshmen as it has no freshmen on its team

  • Stanford competed no athlete below the junior level.

  • 50 % of Michigan’s routines came from Frederick Richard and Paul Juda.

  • Illinois made heavy use of freshmen.

75 % of gymnasts competed in 1 or 2 routines in the finals. The median was 2 routines. One standard deviation above the mean was 3.45 routines, which is 4 because fortunately no one competed 0.45 of a routine. So I considered anyone who competed 4 or more routines an MVP.

  • Ian Sandoval of Illinois is the only gymnast to be both a freshman and an “MVP”.
