Men’s NCAA Gymnastics 2026 Week 2 Snapshot

The Big Picture

The Rocky Mountain Open saw the clash of the Titans, Oklahoma and Stanford. Oklahoma was ranked first in the pre-season CGA coaches’ poll, and that’s how they finished. Stanford brought the difficulty (team D score of 121.2, by far the highest competed by any team so far) and Oklahoma brought the execution (team E score of 207.55), also the highest so far this season). Neither team had a perfect meet, but Oklahoma prevailed 323.95 to Stanford’s 320.75, despite coming in with a 4.7 D score deficit. It’s still early, and Stanford had yet to compete Asher Hong at all or Jun Iwai at full power, so expect their difficulty to increase.

Air Force alum Patty Hoopes got the highest score on PH (14.85/6.2). The highest PH D score competed last year was 6.3 from Ihor Dyshuk at the Ukrainian Championships EF (his total score was 12.575). Only Nariman Kurbanov of Kazakhstan competed as high as 6.2 last year. Hoopes will be competing at the Cottbus World Cup in February, along with Illini Brandon Dang and Ohio State alum Kameron Nelson.

Oklahoma Alum Yul Moldauer returned to competition for the first time since the 2024 Olympic Trials to finish third in the AA with a score of 79.1. He qualified to Winter Cup with his placing (second-place finisher Bogonosiuk is pre-qualified). He did not have a perfect meet, so he has the potential to score 80+ in the AA.

Jr. David Shamah of Stanford is having a real glow up. He barely competed as a freshman, not much more as a sophomore, and now he’s achieved the highest AA so far this season (79.7) to win the AA at RMO and qualify to Winter Cup.

Freshman Sasha Bogonosiuk made his debut in the AA to finish 0.05 points behind David Shamah. Oklahoma swept the NCAA competition on PH, led by a 14.25/5.7 from Ignacio Yockers (now competing for Spain), followed by freshman Colby Aranda, and RS Jr. Mac Seyler. Freshman Nathan Roman made his debut with a 13.95/5.2 on floor and a win on PB (14.5/5.4).

Nebraska finished third with a score of 315.5 and a team D score of 116.1, putting them right behind Oklahoma’s 116.5. That score puts them right in the chase pack(along with Michigan and Penn State) behind leaders Oklahoma and Stanford. Chase Mondi (coming off an injury sustained in an attempt to qualify to US Nationals) returned to competition with a 5th place finish on vault (tied with teammate freshman Ty Roderiques), who both scored 14.00 with 4.8 vaults. Nathan York was a major player for Nebraska with a win on floor and third on PB, both with scores of 14 or above.

Air Force finished fourth with 302.1(team total D 104.7). Air Force lost some important competitors since last season, including Patrick Hoopes and all-arounder Erich Upton. Freshman Isaac Koo and John Hults each competed in four events for Air Force.

Penn State won its 26th West Point Open with a score of 313.5 (team D 115.7). Army finished second with a score of 306.5, achieving the second-highest team E score of the season, at 206.05. They were followed by Navy (302.55), Springfield (300.95), William and Mary (294.6), and Simpson (294.3). Simpson had the most sticks of any team in week 2. Brian Solomon of Navy added to his all-around titles with a 77.55 win.. Devon Felsenstein of William and Mary added another 14 PH score to his record.

Defending champion Michigan won the Ohio State Open with a score of 315.8 and a total difficulty of 110.9. Fred Richard and Adam Lakomy did not compete, so we haven’t seen Michigan at full power. At this point, they are vulnerable on still rings and parallel bars. The star performer for Michigan was Aaronson Mansberger on PH, with a score of 14.9/5.8 to win the event and make him eligible to petition to Winter Cup as a pommel specialist. He met the requirement of having a 6.5 D score or above and finishing in the top two at his qualifying event. Ohio State finished second with a score of 311.3.. The big surprise was DIII Greenville finishing ahead of D1 Illinois, 307.45 to 307.1. Greenville outright won two events, with Jaxon Clapper winning FX and PB. What happened to Illinois was a combination of not having their full lineup and bad luck (particularly on HB). They came in with enough difficulty to win, but just had one of those days. Next time will be better.
