The Big Picture

Oklahoma is back in the number one spot with a 328.65 team score, the highest in the nation so far this season, along with the highest total team E score of the season (210.45). The storyline is shaping up to be Stanford and Oklahoma battling for the top spot. The chase pack is led by Michigan, with Ohio State, Nebraska, and Penn State a bit behind. Illinois has the potential to join that pack, but their season is getting off to a bit of a slow start.

Michigan defeated Illinois 318.55 to 306.7. Illinois had the difficulty to challenge Michigan (114.2 to Michigan’s 115.9), but had struggles on pommel horse and still rings, and was not able to make it up anywhere else.

Greenville took down its second D1 team of the season, defeating California and Simpson. California led for the first three rotations, but Greenville turned it around on vault and ended up defeating California by 0.05 points. A bright spot for Simpson was Braxton Jones 14.45 on vault.

Navy defeated Army 308.2 to 303. Army performed to its potential, outexecuting Navy by 0.3 points, but the 5.6 D score advantage won the day for Navy. Navy started out strong with the seventh-highest floor score in the nation so far this season (54.25) and held that lead until the end.

Nebraska and Penn State had a close one, with Nebraska eventually taking the meet by 1.45 points. Nebraska took an early lead with a massive 55.2 on floor (the highest in the nation so far). Penn State turned it around with a strong performance on still rings, but Nebraska answered with a strong performance on parallel bars and held on through high bar to take the win.

Oklahoma (328.65) defeated Ohio State (317.7) and Air Force (season high of 303.05) on Cleveland Cubs night in front of an audience of close to 2000 people. Ohio State’s score would have won many other meets, but it wasn’t enough against Oklahoma. Oklahoma has a long-standing relationship with Cleveland Cubs Elementary School, and they always show up for the Sooners. Keep an eye on Colby Aranda of Oklahoma, who worked his way up from the Oklahoma club to become number one in the nation on pommel horse.

Stanford competed at Elite Canada, scoring 321.465 to Team Canada’s 322.528 under the collegiate 4-up, 4-count scoring format. Jun Iwai scored 79.916 in the AA and competed a 5.6 floor routine for the first time this season to score 14.35. More details Cardinal Wraps Competition in Canada - Stanford Cardinal - Official Athletics Website. Road To Nationals is including these scores in the NCAA rankings. I did not include scores from that meet in my details, as it isn’t an NCAA meet. They likely won’t include whatever score Brandon Dang gets at Cottbus, so it isn’t consistent.
