Men’s NCAA Gymnastics Week 4 Snapshot
by SORA A1
The Big Picture
Stanford and Michigan didn’t compete this weekend, but Stanford held onto the number one spot, with Oklahoma in second, and Ohio State jumping over Michigan. Michigan, Penn State, and Nebraska round out the top six.
Ohio State defeated Nebraska 316.3 to 313.05. Nebraska started out in the lead, increasing its margin to 3.2 points, until trouble on parallel bars allowed Ohio State to catch up and extend its lead even further with a great high bar rotation to finish 3.25 points ahead of Nebraska.
Springfield defeated William and Mary 310.55 to 303.1 (William and Mary took an injury deduction). William and Mary had a narrow lead after floor, but starting with a pommel horse rotation anchored by newcomer Devon Felsenstein and veteran Peyton Cramer, Springfield took the lead and never looked back. Springfield also put up the highest total team execution so far this season (209.45).
Penn State led start to finish to defeat Illinois 316.8 to 311, in another rough meet for the Illini. It’s still early in the season, so hopefully Illinois can get on track for a good showing at Nationals in Champaign. Sam Phillips of Illinois competed a 5.6 D score high bar routine, the highest difficulty done so far this year.
In the Springfield and Penn State meets, the winners finished ahead of teams with close to the same difficulty, with large winning margins mostly achieved with execution.
Oklahoma defeated Greenville 320 to 305.6. Oklahoma rested Sasha Bogonosiuk and Nathan Roman. Fuzzy Benas only competed two events. Pommel guy Ignacio Yockers got to take his shot at still rings. Of note, Logan Watterston is back in the Greenville lineup, after taking a year off.
